School Readiness and Transitions

At our preschool, we are passionate about helping every child develop the confidence, independence and emotional wellbeing needed for a successful transition into school. We believe that school readiness is about far more than simply reading and writing. Instead, it is about supporting children to become confident learners, effective communicators, resilient individuals and socially capable members of their new school community.

Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, we provide a rich and engaging learning environment where children learn through play, exploration and meaningful experiences. Through our daily practice, children develop important lifelong skills including:

– Communication and language skills
– Personal, social and emotional development
– Independence and self-care skills
– Confidence and resilience
– Listening, attention and concentration
– Curiosity and problem-solving
– Positive relationships and cooperation with others
– Early literacy and mathematical understanding through play-based learning

We understand that families can sometimes feel pressure around preparing children for school, particularly regarding reading, writing and academic expectations. At our preschool, we are committed to reassuring families that every child develops at their own pace and that school readiness is not defined by academic achievement alone. We strongly believe that children should be supported to feel emotionally secure, confident and excited about learning, rather than pressured to meet unrealistic expectations.

We also believe that school readiness is equally about schools being ready for children. Successful transitions happen when schools, families and early years settings work together to understand and support each child as an individual. Our role is to advocate for children, celebrate their unique strengths and help ensure that their next learning environment is ready to meet their needs.

At Caldecote Preschool, we work closely with our local primary schools to ensure every child experiences a positive transition. We share detailed information about each child’s learning and development, arrange transition visits where appropriate, and work in partnership with families to ensure children feel confident, secure and excited about beginning their next adventure. Children with additional needs receive enhanced transition planning tailored to their individual strengths and needs, helping them start school with the right support in place. This collaborative approach helps schools build positive relationships with children from the very beginning of their school journey.

Our aim is for every child to leave preschool feeling happy, valued, confident and excited for the next stage of their education.
